The role of corpus evidence in phraseological unit pedagogy

Phraseological units – such as collocations, idioms, and lexical bundles – are critical for achieving language fluency. Corpus linguistics provides a data-driven basis for identifying and teaching these multi-word expressions, revealing their frequency, usage patterns, and contextual meanings. This paper explores how theories like Sinclair’s idiom principle and Hoey’s lexical priming inform language pedagogy, with special attention to collocational competence in second-language learners. The implications for instructional design and learner autonomy are also discussed.
